Hola...First Trailer For [REC]4: Apocalypse Is A Bloody Reminder

No comments:

It's time to get out.....Hola, it's the first English language trailer for [REC]4: Apocalypse a stark reminder of how bloody but most all how great this franchise is!

After been accordingly invited to the wedding in [REC]3:Genesis the prequel and how the whole shebang started it's time to fast forward and see how it'll all end. After his compadre Paco Plaza did the honours with Genesis Jaume Balaguero  returns to the directors chair after a spell  scaring the heevie jeevies out us all with his fantastic Hitchcockian chiller Sleep Tight. The film returns to our young roving TV news  reporter we met in the first film Angel Vidal and after revelation end of  film two that she's effected the blood will spill and the infection spreads as she makes it outside!

We believe this is the final film but like any popular franchise never say never especially if the money is stilling rolling in we may get another film. The other question  is in [REC]3: Genesis they dumped the found /first person footage style for the straight film, will they return to the old format? That maybe revealed later this month as the film is been promoted at Cannes marketplace, whose in it and exactly when [REC]4: Apocalypse will be out we don't know at this stage expect late 2013 at least we can say this is a good bet to appear at Film 4 frightfest  in August?

Fasten Seat Belts Almodovar's I'm So Excited Has 'Exciting' Important Message For You

No comments:
In preparation of the release of Perdo Almodovar's I'm So Excited, out in cinemas on 3rd May, we have a fantastic comical info graphic celebrating some of the cheekier elements of the film.

I'm So Excited is set upon a doomed flight heading to Mexico City. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque charactes whom in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. Life in the clouds is as complicated as it is at ground level, and for the same reasons, which could summarised in two: sex and death.

Follow the @PeninsulaCrew on Twitter and check out this great little in-flight-style guide to celebrate the release! The question should you be excited? Read our review here and go check out I'm So Excited when it's released in UK&Ireland 3rd May.

Attack Of The Werewolves DVD Review

No comments:
I had such high hopes for Attack of the Werewolves (2011), the new Spanish monster horror which has been impressing audiences and critics alike since its initial release earlier this year. Unfortunately as most of director Juan Martínez Moreno's hairy tale, starring Gorka Otxoa, Carlos Areces, Luis Zahera and Secun de la Rosa takes place in the dark, it's extremely hard to tell what is going on for most of the time and whether, as a result, it's any good.

Legend has it that in 1910 in a remote Spanish village, the evil Marchioness of Marino, captured a travelling gypsy and managed to get herself pregnant by him. In revenge the gypsies wife cursed the Marchioness's resulting offspring, transforming him into a werewolf and placing the village under a reign of terror from the beast. The only way to free the village and the Marchioness's son from the curse is for one of her descendants to be sacrificed to the werewolf on the one hundredth anniversary of the original atrocity.

The present day and Tomás Mariño (Otxoa) a semi-successful writer has returned to his home town, where he has been invited by the local people to receive an award - or at least so they have led him to believe. Unfortunately for Tomás the villagers have something darker in mind, if only they can get him to play along with their plan.

As I said I was really looking forward to this offbeat black comedy which, if I'm honest, is reasonably well executed, up to a point. The wolves when they eventually appear (you begin to wonder when you will actually see any, as it's almost a third of the way into the film before they actually put in an appearance) are effectively pulled off, albeit in a 1980's American Werewolf in London way. A sharp vein of black humour runs through the proceedings as a whole, with one scene involving the amputation and cooking of certain human appendages in order to placate a suspected werewolf being particularly effective. The relationship between Tomás and his hapless friends and relations who find themselves joining forces in a fight for their lives, also helps to add an extra dimension which leaves the viewer actually interested in what happens to the characters, which makes for a refreshing change.

Another aspect in the film's favour are the settings. Filmed in Galicia, Spain, the sun-bleached streets of the village and exterior of Tomás' family manor house lend themselves perfectly to this tale of late night lycanthropy. Or at least you imagine they would if you could see them. When the sun sets it's hard to see exactly what is gong on, other than the odd close up of a furry, fanged face, the odd severed limb flying through the air and a lot of screaming and crunching of, what one presumes, are bones.

In the glory days of Hammer, the studio which put horror on the map was well known for its day for night shots, which must have been reasonably effective as the scenes shot this way appeared to be taking place at night, yet still let you to see everything that took place. Many modern fright films should be provided night vision goggles in order to let you see what is happening once the sun goes down, and as a result leave the viewer guessing as to much of what is taking place.

Attack of the Werewolves is, on the whole, not bad. One can only imagine its brilliance if you'd been able to see it all.

Frightfest 2012 - [Rec]3 Genesis review

No comments:

★★★★

The first thing to remember when you sit down to watch [Rec] Genesis is that it is a very different film to its predecessors. Rec (2007) and Rec 2 (2009) have already garnered more than their fair share of cult following and critical acclaim, Rec 2 often being cited as one of the best horror sequels since Dawn of the Dead, and for this the expectations for a third entry were mixed.

The film follows the story of Koldo (Diego Martin) and Clara (Leticia Dolera) who’s wedding reception is turned into a nightmare when their guests begin to tear each other apart. The newlyweds are split up in the commotion and take shelter with other survivors while the infected pick off family and friends. With a mansion filled with blood-hungry psychopaths between them, the two set out to find one another on what could be the last day of their lives.

The first two films are very close in composition and narrative with a controlled escalation of both mythology and action ensuring all bases are covered. The third film, in order to hold its own, instead ups the ante on action and scope, while changing the basic feel of the piece. After the first twenty minutes I’msurprised to see the handheld camera destroyed and the film switching to a polished omniscience as it captures the demise of the shattered camcorder. We get the message: this isn’t Rec one or two, this is three and the rules are different. It’s a big “screw you” to the doubting Thomas’s who saw this ending in tears. Knowing that Paco Plaza, co-writer/director of the previous two films, was on board should have been a tell-tale sign that all would be well.

Dolera and Martin make a lovable amateur kick-ass duo, and it’s their brilliant performances that give the film a heart to build on.Dolera in particular is fantastic, going from doe-eyed lover to sizzling heroin with the helpful inclusion of a chainsaw. Plaza has boldly made attempts to create iconic images from reworked horror iconography and it’s that admirable understanding of genre that helps give his film more bite.

The third Rec is a direct product of the first two in many ways. There’s a good piece of entertainment for newbies to the series and a rewarding escapade for the more seasoned fans. The little details are in abundance and they help layer the film up and link it back to the first two: when an uncle explains how he got bit by a dog at the vet, alarm bells ring, similarly when someone says “switch to night vision” you can’t help but shiver. On the subject of scares the film’s black comedy element does outweigh its capacity to scare us shitless. Where in Rec we spent the last ten minutes whispering “What the fuck is that?” and Rec 2 had us whispering “Where the fuck did it go!” Genesis sports dubious moments of “Really?” The black comedy can be too much considering the series origins, especially when the groom gets all Don Quixote, complete with shivering Sancho Panza. Nothing in this film comes close to the horror of the Medeiros girl in Rec’s one and two.

Plaza gets ample opportunity to show off what he can do on a solo mission; steering some impressive set-pieces without letting the mood slip. One particular sequence when the shit first hits the fan and the entire wedding reception goes from family fun to bloodbath in twenty seconds, shows an inspired understanding of chaos which sets the mood for the rest of the film. One can’t help but feel Plaza has been dying to orchestrate Hell on this scale since day one.

Racing down the OTT path shamelessly and aiming for laughs en route will alienate a lot of fans, as will the polished glitzy look in comparison to the thus-far gritty and grim feel of the films, but needs must for the survival of the idea and you can’t fault its concept or watchability. The result is this, a near-perfect showcase of gory glory with heart, and brains, and everything else in between.

Frightfest 13th Preview:Your Cordingly Invited To [REC]Genesis This September

No comments:

One of the highlights of this year’s Film4 Frightfest in London, at which it will premiere on Friday, 24th August 2012, the long-awaited and highly anticipated third instalment of the planned four-part saga has finally arrived and, boy, was it worth the wait. Your cordingly invited to witness [Rec] 3 Genesis.

As the families and friends of Koldo and Clara gather outside the church in the bright Spanish sunshine just prior to the happy couple’s wedding, it seems that nothing could possibly cast a shadow on such a beautiful and joyous occasion. But when some of the guests start behaving oddly during the reception, it becomes apparent that all is not well. In no time at all, the party descends into a hellish scene of utter carnage as partygoers begin feeding on each other with a crazed bloodlust. Amidst the ensuing chaos, Koldo and Clara become separated as those still in control of their human minds and bodies seek whatever refuge they can find. Although apart, the newlyweds know deep in their hearts that each is still alive and set out on a desperate search for each other not fully realising that what should have been the happiest day of their lives

Paco Plaza, co-writer and co-director (with Jaume Belaguero) of the first two movies, goes it alone for this outing and breathes new life into the proceedings by bravely and totally unexpectedly giving the series a whole new spin. Closer in tone to “Shaun Of The Dead”, “Army Of Darkness” and “Braindead” that to its more sombre predecessors, it also introduces some truly iconic images, not least of which is the one of the movie’s bloodied heroine dressed in her revealingly torn bridal gown and wielding a chainsaw.

So expect some crazy humour with your blood, gore, zombies and this is one gift bag at the end of the wedding you wont want to be around to collect. [Rec]3 Genesis will be going directly to DVD/ Blu-Ray after it's appearance at Frightfest the 13th August 24th, it will be released September 3rd. The film stars Letitia Dolera (Man Push Cart; The Other Side Of The Bed), Diego Martin (I Want You), Claire Baschet (Delicacy) and Ismael Martinez (Carmen; Talk To Her).
