Film Review - Bridget Jones's Baby (2016)

It’s tricky to think of a trilogy that ranks high within the romantic comedy genre. That is simply because The Bridget Jones franchise can now be crowned as the first. If a fourth instalment is brought forth, it would make the only romantic comedy trilogy reputation perish like Hugh Grant’s Daniel Cleaver. Let’s just say this pivotal character is written out of the third instalment cunningly. Be that as it may, although it has been twelve years since the middling ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,’ it was surprising to see that the third instalment impresses with witty, dry comedic British humour. This is all thanks to the co-screen writing talent of our beloved Emma Thompson as she almost steals the film due to the fact that she has written for herself the most sarcastic, sharp and sardonic lines. Her Dr Rawlings, Bridget’s gynaecologist makes the viewers laugh heard all the way to the auditorium.

The plot is simplistic, which is the feasible requirements of a romantic comedy. Breaking up with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) leaves Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) at the age of 43 and single again. Although she has everything under control, Bridget decides to concentrate on her career as a top news producer. Suddenly, her love life comes back from the dead when she meets a dashing and handsome American named Jack (Patrick Dempsey). Things couldn't be better, until Bridget discovers that she is pregnant. Now, the mystified mom-to-be must figure out if the proud papa is Mark or Jack. How will she tell them? How will they take it? Will both potential fathers put their differences aside and work together for the sake of the baby? This is where it gets very entertaining and the audience will definitely enjoy the ride and possibly side with Mark or Jack to be the biological father.

Patrick Dempsey is most welcome to this franchise as he is the opposite of Daniel Cleaver. He’s amiable, pleasant and is not afraid to get in touch with his feminine side compared to the masculine, brooding, and knight in shining armour Darcy. The two male leads are perfect flipsides to the coin that Bridget tosses and decides in the end what side it must land on. Her choice of man in the end satisfies the audience but provides excellent twists and turns to excite and surprise the viewers with tears of joy.

The world hasn’t had a ‘knocked Up’ or ‘Juno’ sort of film for nearly a decade. These types of comedies ensure that the public accept the premise in small doses and ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ has popped up or more rather out at the perfect time after a long period. Most notably our lead Renee Zellweger still proves that she has the audience at hello. Even after a long hiatus from the A-List territory, she has proven to the audience that she can still hold her own. The audience will love her the reason being she makes us laugh as well as prove that American’s can still play Brit’s as long as we get to play American super heroes. E.G Bale, Cavell and now Tom Holland. It’s a fair trade. Welcome back Renee. It was a pleasure to watch an old couple rekindle the fire as well as a new couple start one.
